BYD, China's largest electric-vehicle maker, has formally confirmed that its first humanoid AI robot, Xiao Di, will make its public debut in early August 2026 at the company's Di Space experience center in Zhengzhou. The announcement, delivered to the South China Morning Post and Cailian Press, transforms a leaked July post into an on-the-record product launch.
A Showroom Companion, Not A Concept
BYD's Executive Vice President Stella Li has been telegraphing this move since June, describing a plan to deploy two to three humanoids in every BYD showroom to greet customers, explain vehicles and eventually perform live demonstrations. Xiao Di is reported to be 1.61 meters tall, weigh 58.5 kilograms and carry 31 degrees of freedom — seven per hand, six per leg, three at the waist and two at the neck — with real-time translation across six Chinese dialects and six foreign languages.
Manufacturing As A Moat
Unlike pure-play humanoid startups, BYD arrives with in-house batteries, motors, power electronics and chips already at automotive scale. That vertical integration mirrors the argument Tesla makes for Optimus and is exactly what Xpeng (Iron), Chery (Aimoga) and now SAIC-GM are chasing. Industry consultants told the SCMP the market will focus less on the robot itself and more on BYD's production capacity and pricing.
Blocked At The US Border
The debut lands at an awkward moment for cross-border expansion. On July 28 the FCC approved strict import restrictions on newly developed Chinese humanoid and quadruped robots, citing supply-chain and espionage risk. The rule targets new-to-market models — a definition that catches Xiao Di squarely. For now BYD, like Unitree, is effectively locked out of the US and will focus on China and other international markets.
