CIP's Coalburn 1 Powers Up As Europe's Largest 500MW / 1GWh BESS

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners has brought its 500 MW / 1,000 MWh Coalburn 1 battery energy storage system into commercial operation in South Lanarkshire — Europe's largest operational lithium-ion BESS.

CIP's Coalburn 1 Powers Up As Europe's Largest 500MW / 1GWh BESS

Danish fund manager Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners has brought its flagship Coalburn 1 battery energy storage system into commercial operation, the company announced on August 12, 2026. Sitting in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, the 500 MW / 1,000 MWh lithium-ion project is now Europe's largest operational grid-scale BESS and connects directly to the UK transmission network.

Scale, speed and grid services

Financed through CIP's flagship Copenhagen Infrastructure IV fund, Coalburn 1 provides two hours of continuous discharge at nameplate power. The system will offer frequency response, dynamic containment and energy arbitrage into GB power markets while helping National Grid ESO integrate a growing share of variable wind generation. CIP said the plant will strengthen "flexibility and resilience of the UK electricity system" and reduce curtailment costs passed to consumers.

A 1.5 GW portfolio in the making

Coalburn 1 is the first of three Scottish battery assets on the drawing board. Together with the planned Coalburn 2 and Devilla sites, CIP is building a 1.5 GW / 3 GWh portfolio — the equivalent of roughly one large gas-fired peaker's worth of firm capacity, but with instantaneous ramp times measured in milliseconds. Only Gen-i's 220 MWh Romanian BESS and EDF's 400 MW / 1,600 MWh Winston project in Nevada come close in current announcements.

Europe's storage decade

Europe's grids are racing to add long-duration and grid-forming storage as onshore wind and solar penetration climbs. Coalburn 1 joins a wave of recent commissioning news — from Enel's grid-forming BESS in Chile to Greenvolt's 218-million-euro Polish BESS financing — that show utility-scale batteries are moving from pilot to backbone.
