Cummins (NYSE: CMI) said on August 18, 2026 that its Power Systems business has been selected to supply its largest-ever battery energy storage system for a big U.S. data-center project — a deal the company frames as validation that BESS has become table stakes for hyperscale AI campuses.
What the system does
The BESS will handle utility-defined requirements for AI-driven load fluctuations, mitigate load oscillations at the interconnection and support ride-through performance. Because AI training clusters can swing tens of megawatts in seconds, grid operators are increasingly demanding on-site storage that can charge or discharge fast enough to prevent those swings from hitting the wider network.

Cummins BESS uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry with liquid-cooling thermal management, 5 MWh nominal capacity per block, a flexible DC block architecture compatible with multiple PCS and EMS ecosystems, and is bridge-to-grid ready for integration with diesel and natural gas gensets. Certifications span UL 9540A, UL 9540, UL 1973, NFPA 855, NFPA 68, IEEE 1547 and UL 1741 SA/SB.
Where Cummins fits
Launched in May 2025, Cummins BESS extends a diesel-and-gas backup franchise that has anchored the data-center standby market for decades. The company is going head-to-head with pure-play battery vendors — many of them Chinese — as U.S. hyperscalers push to add utility-scale storage at every site. Why this matters
Financial terms, location and customer identity are undisclosed. But Cummins Power Systems president Jenny Bush said BESS is now "emerging as a strategic power enabler" for developers hitting grid constraints and multi-year interconnection queues — a message aimed squarely at investors weighing AI power picks and shovels.
