Databricks And Microsoft Extend Azure Partnership Into The 2030s

Databricks will move to Microsoft Cobalt 200 and run its own core operations on Azure Databricks, while Microsoft embeds Genie and Unity AI Gateway across Microsoft 365, Teams and Copilot.

Databricks And Microsoft Extend Azure Partnership Into The 2030s

Microsoft and Databricks on July 23, 2026 announced they will extend their decade-long strategic partnership into the 2030s, deepening the integration between Azure Databricks and Microsoft's enterprise stack and giving Databricks a first crack at Microsoft's Cobalt 200 chip.

Cobalt 200 becomes the new Databricks workhorse

Databricks currently runs on Microsoft's Cobalt 100 Arm-based cloud CPUs and will migrate to Cobalt 200, which Microsoft says delivers up to 50% more performance and enables memory encryption by default. The deal also commits Databricks to running its own core business operations and unified lakehouse on Azure Databricks — a public "we eat our own dog food at Fortune-500 scale" endorsement of the platform.

Genie and Unity AI Gateway wire into the Microsoft stack

Microsoft will natively surface Databricks' Genie agentic coworker inside Microsoft 365, Teams and Copilot, alongside the Unity AI Gateway for governing agents and models. The integration spans Microsoft Entra, Azure Data Lake Storage, OneLake, Power BI, Purview, Foundry, Power Platform and Copilot — effectively making Databricks' data plane a first-class citizen of the Microsoft AI runtime.

The enterprise-AI arms race just got tighter

The extension follows Databricks' $188B strategic round and its launch of Presence-adjacent enterprise features by rival OpenAI. Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft's Commercial Business, framed the deal around "connecting data, AI and business context to accelerate decision-making," while Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi cast Genie plus Unity AI Gateway as the way enterprises will "ground AI in business knowledge" without losing cost control or governance. Customers already deep on the joint stack include Banco Bradesco, Cincinnati Reds, Electrolux, SMBC and Unilever.
