EHang Holdings (Nasdaq: EH) on August 28, 2026 completed the first public flight of its EH216-S pilotless human-carrying eVTOL at Hong Kong Cyberport, kicking off the highest-profile demonstration yet of the HKSAR government's Low-Altitude Economy "Regulatory Sandbox X" trial. The aircraft — the world's first pilotless eVTOL to hold a Type Certificate, Production Certificate and Standard Airworthiness Certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China — will fly repeated public sessions at the Cyberport waterfront vertiport from August 28 through 30 to validate reliability under regular, high-frequency operations.
A flagship for the Greater Bay Area
Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong, Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan and Cyberport Chairman Simon Chan witnessed the flight alongside EHang's chief operating officer Zhao Wang and chief financial officer Conor Yang. The EH216-S took off vertically, cruised at low altitude and hovered along pre-programmed routes, exercising the pilotless flight-control stack Hong Kong regulators are studying as the foundation for permanent low-altitude rules — the government said dedicated non-conventional-aircraft legislation is targeted for 2027.
Sandbox X as a global template
Hong Kong's Regulatory Sandbox X, launched earlier this year as an extension of the March 2025 Low-Altitude Economy Regulatory Sandbox, is running 33 pilot projects including four non-conventional-aircraft trials. EHang's Zhao Wang said the sandbox approach "offers a replicable model for introducing pilotless aviation" in markets that lack a regulatory framework — a playbook the company plans to export through its Global Fast Track Program to Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Kwoon Chung Smart Mobility, which is teaming with EHang and Cyberport on the trial, is stitching the eVTOL routes into a broader smart-mobility fabric alongside its ground autonomous fleets.
A busy month for EHang
The Hong Kong flight caps a bruising month of activity for the Guangzhou-based air-mobility pioneer. On August 25, EHang reported second-quarter revenue up 203.5% quarter-on-quarter as it broadened commercial services beyond passenger mobility, and on August 20 it appointed KPMG Huazhen as its independent public accounting firm. The company is also advancing Regulatory Sandbox programs in Thailand alongside its work in Hong Kong. Rivals across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area are moving too — XPeng just closed a $900 million round for its robotics arm, and XPeng's robotaxi service is now in Guangzhou beta.
Why it matters
Public, pilotless passenger flight in a dense urban environment is the milestone the whole advanced air-mobility industry has been chasing. If Hong Kong ratifies its 2027 legislation on the strength of Regulatory Sandbox X data — the government's stated intent — EHang will hold a two-year lead on Western competitors still working through FAA Part 135 airworthiness paperwork, and the Cyberport waterfront vertiport will effectively serve as a live demonstrator for regulators everywhere.
