Physical-AI research lab Enigma exited stealth on 27 July 2026 with a $71 million seed round led by Index Ventures and Ribbit Capital, with participation from Sarah Guo's Conviction Partners and individual angels from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, xAI, Cognition and Wiz. Enigma is betting that the bottleneck in robotics is not raw model capability but human-robot interfaces.
Not another foundation-model race
Founded in 2025 by CEO Jonathan Jacobi and CTO Gal Niv — friends who met in teenage hacking competitions and later served together in Israel's elite Unit 8200 — Enigma is doing the unusual thing of building its own robot arms and its own foundation models entirely in-house. Jacobi, once Microsoft's youngest-ever employee and later recruited by Wiz founder Assaf Rappaport, told TechCrunch the pitch: manipulating a robot should feel as intuitive as turning a car's volume knob, not spending 15 minutes explaining where to put each dish.
The internet as a robot-training lab
To find that "knob," Enigma is putting its robots online. Anyone on the internet can log in at robots.online and remotely drive more than 100 of its proprietary AI robots, housed in dedicated hangars in Israel and California, through tasks such as drawing with a paintbrush, mixing chemistry flasks and sword-fighting each other. Every interaction feeds back into Enigma's foundation model — a scaled-up version of "how humans naturally want to instruct a machine."
Who's writing the checks
The $71M seed is among the largest robotics seed rounds of the year and puts Enigma squarely into the physical-AI arms race alongside Travis Kalanick's Atoms ($1.7B), Gritt Robotics' $32.4M launch, and Europe's newly minted humanoid unicorn. Index Ventures partner Shardul Shah framed the differentiator: "Someone who's an insider may start with the capability of teleoperation or dexterity, but Enigma is starting from a very different place: 'What's the ultimate experience?'"
What comes next
Enigma is not disclosing specific customers, but says it is already piloting with partners in healthcare, logistics and entertainment. The company plans to expand its online experiment, add new interaction modalities (voice, text, tap-and-drag, video demonstration) and use the resulting dataset to steer its next-generation foundation model. Whether Enigma's contrarian bet on interfaces pays off will show up first in its ability to translate playful public demos into a real, teachable, general-purpose robot brain.
