Etched, the Cupertino inference-chip startup founded by three Harvard dropouts in 2022, has closed a $300 million Series C at a $10.3 billion post-money valuation, co-founder and COO Robert Wachen told TechCrunch on July 23, 2026. The round was led by Sequoia Capital, with Andreessen Horowitz, SK Hynix, Jane Street and Diffusion Capital joining alongside earlier backers Peter Thiel, Andrej Karpathy, Dylan Field and Amjad Masad.
The Round: Highest-Valued Sequoia-Led Series C On Record
Etched was valued at $5 billion in December when it raised a $500 million round; the July financing therefore roughly doubles its valuation inside seven months. Etched says this is the highest valuation ever for a Sequoia-led Series C. The company also disclosed that first full systems are being tested by clients and that $1 billion of orders have been booked ahead of volume delivery.
Sohu Rack: Cluster-Scale Memory And Low-Voltage Inference
Etched sells full inference racks, not standalone chips. The system splits work between a low-voltage prefill chip (which handles the compute-heavy prompt-ingestion step, running cool enough to pack in more transistors) and a decode-side memory fabric the company calls cluster-scale memory, which lets many chips share a low-latency memory pool. The rack runs any transformer, plus Mixture of Experts architectures such as DeepSeek and Qwen and non-transformer state-space models like Mamba — a claim Etched is quick to make in response to critics who framed the company as a one-model bet.
Manufacturing And The Nvidia Question
First silicon was produced by TSMC and validated last month, alongside a new 80,000-square-foot facility near Etched’s San Jose headquarters that expands prototyping and pilot production. Access to demo systems is still limited to investors and lead customers, but that constraint is itself part of Etched’s go-to-market: investors including Karpathy (Anthropic), Noam Brown (OpenAI) and Geoffrey Hinton committed after private hands-on sessions. Google is separately reported to be etching parts of Gemini directly into silicon on its own Frozen v2 chip, suggesting the once-fringe design premise now has multiple credible backers.
Context Within This Week’s AI-Silicon Story
The round lands alongside AMD’s Advancing AI 2026 keynote, NVIDIA’s RIKEN Blackwell deployment and Intel’s Q2 2026 print showing an 85% yield on 18A, capping a week in which inference economics moved from thesis to procurement question. Etched founders Gavin Uberti (CEO), Wachen and Chris Zhu (CTO) plan to hire aggressively against the fresh capital while ramping delivery of Sohu systems to their existing customer list.
