Fort Robotics, which markets itself as the "trust layer for physical AI," announced on May 28 that it has acquired Mapless AI, a Boston- and Pittsburgh-based startup specializing in vehicle teleoperation and autonomy supervision. The deal folds Mapless's remote operations and onboard perception stack into Fort's Trust Platform, expanding the company from safety-certified machine control into a broader supervised-autonomy architecture for industrial and mobile robots.
What Fort is buying
Mapless AI was co-founded by Philipp Robbel, PhD (MIT) and Jeffrey Kane Johnson, PhD (Indiana University), with a team drawn from Bosch, Apple, Uber and nuTonomy. Its technology adds two capabilities to Fort's lineup: long-distance human-in-the-loop teleoperation, allowing off-site specialists to monitor and operate vehicles or machines from anywhere; and onboard active safety, an environmental-perception layer that lets autonomous machines anticipate hazards and execute contingency maneuvers in real time rather than reacting after the fact.
From safe control to supervised autonomy
Fort has been the dominant provider of safety-certified hardware and software backbones for autonomous systems. Adding remote teleoperation and active sensing positions the combined company to sell what enterprise fleet managers have been asking for: a way to keep humans in the loop without sending them into high-risk zones. A single operator could monitor multiple vehicles across the country and intervene when needed.
"The Physical AI market is a multi-billion-dollar economic engine, but its full potential can only be unlocked if machines are trustworthy enough to operate in real-world human environments," said Samuel Reeves, CEO of Fort Robotics. "Impressive demos are everywhere, but repeatable safety remains rare." Robbel added that joining Fort allows Mapless to bring its "safety-first vision to a much larger platform."
Target markets
Fort said the combined platform is aimed at construction, logistics, defense and last-mile delivery — sectors where autonomous mobility is moving from controlled pilots to deployed fleets. The deal lands during a wave of physical-AI consolidation and capacity moves, including Locus Robotics's pickup of Nexera's NeuraGrasp manipulation tech and the broader push toward foundation models in industrial robotics, including FANUC's deal to bring Google Gemini AI to industrial robots and Daimler subsidiary Torc Robotics's Mila partnership for autonomous trucking. Robotaxi operator Waymo's new Ojai purpose-built vehicle underscores how seriously deployed fleets now take supervised-autonomy plumbing.
What's next
Financial terms were not disclosed. Fort said integration will focus on bringing Mapless's teleoperation tooling and active-safety perception into its existing safety-certified control stack so that customers can mix human supervision and autonomous behavior under a single trust framework. With dozens of vendors racing to claim the "foundation model for robots" title, Fort's bet is that the buyers writing checks will care less about novel demos and more about whether deployed machines can be reliably overseen, halted and explained.
