Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG) announced on September 8, 2026 that it is bringing its most ambitious da Vinci 5 platform upgrade to European hospitals, led by CE-marked Force Feedback instruments and more than 100 system updates that had already begun rolling out in the U.S. earlier this year.
Force Feedback lands in Europe
The centerpiece of the European launch is Force Feedback, a new class of da Vinci 5 instruments that measures tissue interaction forces at roughly 1,000 times per second and returns them to the surgeon at the console. Intuitive said Force Feedback has now received CE mark approval, letting the technology be used in European operating rooms for the first time. "With Force Feedback instruments and new capabilities for da Vinci 5 in Europe, we continue delivering on our vision of a future-ready platform," Dirk Barten, Intuitive's Commercial President for Europe, said in the announcement.
100+ system updates and Telepresence
The European rollout also includes Intuitive Telepresence, a videoconferencing layer that expands operating-room visibility and lets remote experts coach the primary surgeon during a case; surgeon-initiated tool eject at the console; and multi-arm targeting. The da Vinci 5 platform now carries 10,000x the computing power of da Vinci Xi, and Intuitive has expanded Force Feedback support from six to 15 instruments with more increases planned for 2027 to bring down per-procedure cost.
Racing Medtronic and CMR
The European push lands as competition in general-surgery robotics finally intensifies. CMR Surgical launched Versius Plus in the U.S. earlier this year, Medtronic's Hugo secured FDA clearance for urologic use, and Johnson & Johnson has moved OTTAVA through additional FDA milestones. Intuitive still books the majority of the world's robotic procedures — Q2 2026 revenue hit $2.89 billion with 246 da Vinci 5 placements — but the European Force Feedback rollout is designed to keep the platform's premium feature gap open while rivals scale in the U.S.
From CE mark to hospital adoption
Intuitive says the European updates will roll out in phases through the remainder of 2026, mirroring the June U.S. rollout timeline the company set earlier this year. The company also pointed to upcoming SimNow 2 training modules and expanded ecosystem work with FDA's newly proposed guidance on robotically assisted surgical devices, saying safety, reliability and standardised training remain as important as the raw feature list.
