MediaTek unveiled the Dimensity 9600 Pro on September 15, 2026, its first flagship smartphone processor built on TSMC's 2nm node — and the Taiwanese chip designer is claiming a full generational leap in AI throughput and battery life over the outgoing 9500.
A 2nm All-Big-Core CPU
The 9600 Pro packages a 2+3+3 all-big-core CPU cluster, led by two C2-Ultra cores at up to 4.55 GHz and paired with three C2-Pro cores at 4.35 GHz plus three efficiency-tuned C2-Pro cores at 3.1 GHz. MediaTek says the new topology delivers 17% higher single-core performance, 15% more multi-core performance and 61% lower multi-core power consumption than the 9500, cementing 2nm's efficiency edge in flagship silicon.
Dual-NPU For On-Device LLMs
Powering the AI story is a dual-NPU design that combines a new Super Efficient NPU with the flagship NPU 1090. MediaTek quotes 51% higher LLM prefill performance, 55% more token generation per watt and a 40% drop in always-on AI power draw versus the 9500 — headline claims that reflect a growing push to run 10B-plus-parameter models locally on device. The G2-Ultra NX GPU delivers 27% more peak performance at 24% lower power, with raytracing 18% faster.
LPDDR6, UFS 5.0 And Cache At 34.5MB
Beyond the CPU/GPU/NPU triangle, the 9600 Pro is one of the first mobile SoCs to support LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage, feeding 34.5MB of on-die cache. MediaTek said first devices are expected to ship this quarter, though the company has not yet named OEM partners.
Racing Against Apple And Qualcomm
The launch puts MediaTek head-to-head with Apple's A20-class silicon and Qualcomm's next Snapdragon 8 Elite tier, all built at TSMC's N2 node. Rising 2nm design costs — now estimated at roughly $725 million per chip, up from $48 million at 28nm — are consolidating flagship SoC design around a shrinking group of players.
