Medtronic will use next week's Society of Robotic Surgery meeting to unveil Touch Surgery Aide, a real-time AI compute platform for the operating room built on NVIDIA's accelerated stack, alongside FDA-cleared Instrument Exit Point — the first live AI application to run on the platform through Medtronic's Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system.
Inside The Touch Surgery Aide Platform
Touch Surgery Aide is an AI-native compute platform that powers the Touch Surgery ecosystem, which Medtronic says is already present in more than 1,500 operating rooms worldwide. The platform combines computer vision, multimodal AI and accelerated inference on NVIDIA Holoscan, CUDA and TensorRT to process surgical video and case context as procedures happen, and can run multiple AI applications simultaneously against a live case feed.
Instrument Exit Point Ships First
The first FDA-cleared application on Touch Surgery Aide is Instrument Exit Point (IEP), which uses computer vision to warn Hugo surgeons the moment an instrument slips out of the visible field. Medtronic says the notification is meant to reduce inadvertent tissue trauma during minimally invasive cases, and Hugo has now been used across tens of thousands of procedures in more than 35 countries.
Why This Matters
Medtronic's ambitions extend beyond a single application: the platform is designed to expand into laparoscopic surgery and to plug into other Medtronic OR devices, matching Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci ecosystem move. That comes as regulators push more robotic surgery accessories through clearance and hospitals adopt first-in-nation robotic transplant cases that place greater demands on OR data.
