Meta and Reliance Industries today announced a multi-year agreement under which Reliance will build a 168 megawatt AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, and lease the capacity to Meta with options to scale. It is Meta's first dedicated AI data center in India and the first built-to-suit hyperscale facility constructed in the country for a single global tech customer.
Built-to-suit in Jamnagar
The site will sit inside Reliance's Jamnagar industrial campus, which is being developed into one of the world's largest data center destinations and already has the energy resources and engineering muscle to build at hyperscale speed. The first phase delivers 168 MW, powered by renewable energy and cooled with desalinated seawater. Meta will cover all energy and water costs, while Reliance carries the construction and balance-sheet risk on a build-to-suit basis. The facility is expected to be ready within two years.
Nearly 1 GW of new Indian clean energy
Alongside the lease, Meta has contracted nearly 1 GW of new clean energy with two Indian providers: 837 MW of solar and wind projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka with CleanMax, bringing cumulative capacity with that partner to over 900 MW, and 88 MW of solar and wind across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh with Fourth Partner Energy. These additions are intended to back the Jamnagar campus and broader Meta operations in line with the company's global goal to match 100% of operations with clean and renewable energy.
Filling the last gap in Meta's India stack
The deal closes the third layer of a multi-year India strategy that began with Meta's $5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms in 2020 and expanded last year through a joint venture to bring Llama-powered AI products to Indian enterprises. Combined with Meta's Project Waterworth subsea cable and its existing connectivity footprint, the Jamnagar site gives the company end-to-end compute-to-cable infrastructure in one of its largest user markets, and one where it competes head-to-head with Google, Microsoft and OpenAI for enterprise AI distribution. Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani called the partnership "a transformative moment for India's digital infrastructure." The announcement follows other major AI infrastructure investments in 2026 including Applied Digital's $5.2 billion Delta Forge 2 lease and SoftBank's 5 GW France campus.
Why it matters
Meta is moving compute closer to its fastest-growing user base while keeping capex off its own balance sheet. For India, hosting a Meta-anchored AI campus signals that built-to-suit hyperscale capacity, long dominated by U.S. data center markets, is now arriving in Asia with global-scale economics.
