nT-Tao And Orion Nuclear Team On 20 MW Compact Fusion For US Data Centers

nT-Tao's MEGA pulsed-power fusion platform meets Orion Nuclear's six-state US development pipeline in a study-and-site MoU for 20 MW on-site power.

nT-Tao And Orion Nuclear Team On 20 MW Compact Fusion For US Data Centers

Israeli compact-fusion company nT-Tao and US developer Orion Nuclear Energy Corporation signed a strategic MoU on September 21, 2026 to bring 20 MW modular fusion systems to American data centers, industrial facilities and other high-load customers. The agreement plants an early flag in the emerging "fusion for hyperscale compute" market and gives nT-Tao a US commercialisation partner with sites already being permitted in six states.

The Technology

nT-Tao's MEGA (Modular Energy Generator Architecture) platform is a pulsed-power fusion machine designed to deliver up to 20 MW of continuous electricity from a footprint compact enough to install on-site. The C3 prototype achieved first plasma in January 2026 and, in September, jumped from a 12-module to a 50-module pulsed-power bank — a fivefold power increase that lets the plasma sustain longer, hotter conditions. That kind of tightly coupled pulsed hardware is a departure from the tokamak and stellarator designs backed by Proxima Fusion and Commonwealth Fusion Systems.

Why 20 MW

Orion Chairman John Aycoth said the 20 MW class "lands exactly where we need it to." US developers have been squeezed between microreactors (1–10 MW) that are too small to matter to hyperscale data-center campuses, and utility-scale SMRs (50 MW+) that require a decade of permitting and utility interconnection. A modular 20 MW unit could bolt onto a single data-center campus without triggering the full transmission upgrade path.

Data-Center Angle

The MoU is a study-and-site agreement rather than a purchase order — the two companies plan to identify and evaluate deployment sites across Orion's development pipeline before firming up delivery terms. That said, it is one of the first named fusion-to-data-center commercial arrangements in the US and lands as hyperscalers are hunting every megawatt they can secure: Amazon, Meta and Microsoft have all signed nuclear or SMR letters of intent in the past 12 months.

Quotes

"Partnering with a developer like Orion is exactly the kind of relationship we look for" as fusion moves toward commercial deployment, said Rear Admiral (Ret.) Oded Gour-Lavie, nT-Tao's CEO. Aycoth added that fusion at Orion's scale gives the industry "a genuine bridge product" between microreactors and SMRs.

What Next

Neither company disclosed pricing or a target date for first commercial power. The bill of materials for nT-Tao's platform is the pulsed-power bank rather than long-lead HTS magnets, which the company argues shortens the industrial timeline compared to superconducting-magnet fusion designs. Orion, for its part, expects to bring its first customer-site studies to a decision in 2027.
