NASA has awarded Boulder, Colorado-based Infleqtion a $20 million follow-on contract to advance development and testing of the Quantum Gravity Gradiometer Pathfinder (QGGPf), the agency's first attempt to fly a cold-atom gravity sensor in space. The award, announced on August 27, 2026, brings NASA's total investment in the mission to roughly $40 million and puts a targeted 2030 launch within reach.

What the sensor does

The gradiometer uses laser-cooled rubidium atoms held in an interferometer to measure minute variations in Earth's gravitational field with a sensitivity far beyond conventional accelerometers. From orbit, that resolution would help scientists map underground aquifers, ice-mass loss and mineral deposits, and refine models of ocean circulation and glacial rebound. NASA plans to use the flight to demonstrate that neutral-atom hardware can survive the launch environment and operate in microgravity for extended periods.

What Infleqtion delivers

Under the contract, Infleqtion will build the atomic-physics package at the heart of the instrument and test an engineering development unit at a microgravity drop facility before shipping flight hardware. The company has been extending its neutral-atom platform beyond quantum computing into sensing and timing; the same underlying technology powers its Sqale quantum processor and the Tiqker optical atomic clock. Days earlier, Infleqtion's technology also underpinned Japan's launch of the "Shunkai" full-stack neutral-atom quantum computer at the Institute for Molecular Science with Hitachi.

Wider quantum-in-space push

The award lands as governments race to embed quantum sensors in defense and civilian assets. Infleqtion, which trades on the NYSE under INFQ following its SPAC combination, rose in premarket trading on the news. The company said the contract validates the pathway from lab demonstrations to spaceflight and positions the U.S. as an early mover in the emerging market for orbital quantum sensing.
