Doctors at Shanghai's Huashan Hospital have completed the world's first commercial brain-computer interface implant, placing Chinese neurotech firm Neuracle Medical Technology's coin-sized NEO device onto the brain of a man paralyzed for a decade, the South China Morning Post reported July 20. The implant restored voluntary control of a robotic glove to a patient who had lost the use of his hand after a spinal cord injury.
China cleared NEO in March; Huashan hospital did the first sale
Neuracle's Neural Electronic Opportunity device sits on the surface of the brain's outer membrane and records neuron electrical signals as the patient imagines a hand motion. A computer decodes the signals and drives an external robotic glove that restores basic grip and pinch functions. China's National Medical Products Administration approved NEO for commercial use on March 13, 2026, making it the first invasive BCI in the world cleared for general sale to spinal-cord-injury patients. Huashan Hospital's July operation was the first paid deployment; Neuracle said the device captured "stable, high-quality" brain signals during the procedure and the patient is recovering.
Different architecture from Neuralink
NEO takes a very different technical path than Elon Musk's Neuralink, which threads more than 1,000 electrodes directly into cortical tissue. NEO uses just eight electrodes resting on the brain's surface — a lower-resolution but less invasive design that lends itself to faster regulatory approval and simpler surgery. "While Neuralink still leads in tech, China is playing a game of deployment, becoming the first to market with a passable product and iterating in the field after collecting IRL data, the same playbook with EVs and humanoid robots," PrototypeVC founder Aric Chang wrote on X.
Sector accelerating on both sides of the Pacific
Neuralink's PRIME study — the first in-human trial of its high-bandwidth implant — began enrolling in January 2024 and is expected to complete in 2031, meaning Neuracle's commercial timeline could stay ahead of the U.S. market by years. Synchron, which delivers its Stentrode through blood vessels rather than open-brain surgery, holds the first FDA IDE for a permanently implanted BCI and reported positive one-year U.S. COMMAND study results in 2024. Meta separately unveiled Brain2Qwerty v2 in June, its non-invasive brain-to-text system that approaches the accuracy of implanted devices without surgery, underscoring how quickly the broader BCI stack is maturing.
