Dutch discrete chipmaker Nexperia and India's Tata Electronics have signed a strategic partnership that will move a chunk of Nexperia's MOSFET production onto Indian soil, the two companies announced at SEMICON India 2026 on Thursday. The deal spans front-end wafer fabrication, back-end assembly and joint technology development, with Tata's US$14 billion Dholera and Jagiroad projects supplying the manufacturing footprint.
Two fabs, one supply chain
Under the memorandum of understanding, Tata Electronics' 300mm fab in Dholera, Gujarat will run wafer processing for Nexperia's MOSFET portfolio, while its OSAT complex in Jagiroad, Assam will handle assembly, test and packaging for the finished discrete parts. The companies also pledged a joint R&D track on next-generation devices, tooling and process integration.
“Our collaboration brings complementary strengths across technology and manufacturing while supporting semiconductor capabilities in India,” interim Nexperia CEO Stefan Tilger said in a statement. Tata Electronics CEO and managing director Randhir Thakur called it “an important step in building a globally competitive semiconductor ecosystem in India.”
Why MOSFETs, why now
Nexperia ships more than 100 billion discrete, logic and MOSFET devices a year, primarily out of its European fabs and Asian back-end sites. Diversifying capacity into India gives the company a geopolitical hedge after a public falling-out with Chinese parent Wingtech Technology, and hands Tata a marquee tenant for the Modi government's $13.5 billion phase-two semiconductor mission, which added 11 new MoUs and roughly ₹1 lakh crore in fresh pledges this week.
India's next chip customer roster
The Nexperia-Tata pact slots alongside Tata Electronics' earlier ASML tooling deal for the Dholera fab and lines up with the wider industry rush into Indian silicon capacity. Applied Materials committed $5 billion at SEMICON India this week; Nexperia's addition brings a high-volume discrete customer to Dholera before the fab has printed its first commercial wafer.
