Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk has picked Anthropic as a strategic AI partner, deploying Claude Science and Anthropic's frontier models across its research and development workflows in a bid to compress the path from discovery to marketed medicine.
Claude Science moves into pharma R&D
Announced September 16, 2026, the collaboration will layer Anthropic's newly launched Claude Science research workbench and agentic software-engineering tools onto Novo's drug discovery pipeline, from biological reasoning about disease mechanisms to code that scales analysis across its scientific data estate. Novo says the rollout will apply to work in diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, rare disease and other therapy areas, with what it calls robust data governance and human oversight of every model output.
"AI can help us increase productivity in R&D and compress the path from research to marketed product," Novo Nordisk president and chief executive Mike Doustdar said in the announcement. Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei added that giving leading researchers "safe, capable and trusted frontier models" can shorten research timelines and improve outcomes for patients.
Frontier models meet GLP-1 economics
The deal lands as Novo Nordisk, maker of GLP-1 blockbusters Ozempic and Wegovy, races to defend its lead in obesity and diabetes against Eli Lilly and a wave of oral GLP-1 rivals, while simultaneously pushing into new therapeutic areas. Betting on Claude Science, which Anthropic rolled out this week alongside Claude Docs, Slides and Cowork, gives the company a general-purpose reasoning system it can point at protein design, target validation, translational biology and clinical-operations code.

A pattern of pharma-plus-frontier-lab tie-ups
Anthropic's Novo deal follows a wave of frontier-lab and life-sciences pairings, and adds another anchor customer to Anthropic's Claude for enterprise stack. It also underscores how quickly Big Pharma is moving from AI pilots to production R&D workloads, buying frontier reasoning capacity from labs like Anthropic rather than building comparable models in-house.
For Anthropic, banking a marquee pharma reference for Claude Science is a signal that its agentic Claude product suite is finding traction outside the software developer market where Claude first took off, extending into regulated industries with heavy data-governance requirements.
