NVIDIA Locks In 2 GW Of Australian AI Factory Capacity With 8 Partners By 2027

NVIDIA will partner with AirTrunk, CDC, Firmus, IREN, Megaport, NEXTDC, ResetData and Sharon AI to build up to 2 GW of DSX-based AI factory capacity in Australia by 2027.

NVIDIA Locks In 2 GW Of Australian AI Factory Capacity With 8 Partners By 2027

NVIDIA is bringing its DSX AI factory blueprint to Australia at scale. On September 10, 2026 the Santa Clara chipmaker said it will partner with eight local infrastructure operators — AirTrunk, Canberra Data Centres, Firmus, IREN, Megaport, NEXTDC, ResetData and Sharon AI — to build up to 2 gigawatts of AI compute capacity in the country by 2027, more than doubling Australia's existing 1.6 GW of digital infrastructure load.

DSX at the core, eight operators at the edges

Under the arrangement the eight partners will finance and operate the AI factories, expanding land, power and cooling to host multiple generations of NVIDIA's DSX platform, accelerated computing, networking, software and ecosystem services. NVIDIA supplies the reference design and full technology stack; the Australian operators supply the campuses, permitting and offtake. The company frames the initiative as sovereign Australian AI infrastructure sitting under Australian data-residency rules but running the same DSX Blackwell and Rubin-class GPUs that power hyperscale customers overseas.

Doubling the country's compute base

The buildout is unusually concrete for an infrastructure headline. Two gigawatts on a 1.6 GW installed base means Australia's total AI-ready compute would more than double by 2027, with new capacity expected across NEXTDC's Sydney and Melbourne campuses, AirTrunk's Sydney and Melbourne sites, IREN's Sweetwater-style GPU pods and Firmus's Project Southgate immersion facilities in Tasmania. NEXTDC (ASX: NXT) and Megaport (ASX: MP1) — both publicly listed — traded higher on the news. IREN (Nasdaq: IREN) already runs a $2.1B warrant partnership with NVIDIA for 5 GW of North American capacity; the Australia deal extends that model to the southern hemisphere.

Where it fits in NVIDIA's global AI factory push

The Australia commitment lands in the same fortnight as Cerebras' 165 MW Finland deal, Google's €13B Finland nuclear pledge and NVIDIA's Korea AI factory with Naver and Brookfield. NVIDIA has publicly targeted more than 20 GW of DSX AI factory capacity in commitments across the US, Europe, Middle East and Asia-Pacific, and the Australia announcement pushes that pipeline past the earlier Armenia Firebird build.

Sovereign AI, on Australian grids

The political frame matters. Canberra has spent 2026 pushing sovereign AI legislation, and this deal gives it eight domestic operators — several with existing federal contracts — building the compute rather than fresh hyperscaler entrants. Firmus and IREN emphasise renewable-heavy power stacks, while CDC and NEXTDC hold the strongest sovereign-data credentials for defence-adjacent workloads.
