Oratomic, a stealth Caltech spinout that emerged earlier this year, said Friday it has raised $300 million in a Series A round it plans to use to build the first commercially useful fault-tolerant quantum computer with roughly 20,000 reconfigurable neutral-atom qubits.
A record Series A for a startup less than a year old
The round was co-led by ARCH Venture Partners, Spark Capital and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Bezos Expeditions, Index Ventures, General Catalyst, Lowercarbon Capital, Bain Capital, Formation and Nebular, alongside Infleqtion, Genius Ventures, 7i Capital and Global Frontier Investments. Vinod Khosla wrote on X that Oratomic is Khosla Ventures' "largest initial investment yet," an unusual signal for a firm known for aggressive early bets on transformational science.
Why a smaller qubit count matters
Oratomic co-founder and CEO Dolev Bluvstein told TechCrunch the company was born only after its Caltech researchers demonstrated an error-correction scheme that dramatically shrinks the qubit budget needed for a useful machine. "You would have not previously been able to convince any of us to start a quantum computing company," Bluvstein said. Most competing approaches — including PsiQuantum's photonic architecture — assume a million-qubit ceiling before fault-tolerant algorithms become practical.
A different race, and no NISQ hardware to sell
Unlike Rigetti or IonQ, which sell noisy intermediate-scale quantum systems to research labs and enterprises, Oratomic has no plans to ship interim devices. The company is going straight to a utility-scale system, hoping to leap over incumbent superconducting and trapped-ion competitors. The capital will fund cross-disciplinary hiring across advanced optics, atomic physics and classical control hardware, plus the reconfigurable atom-array hardware Oratomic already demonstrated in the lab at reduced scale.
The competitive backdrop
Oratomic's raise arrives during a red-hot stretch for quantum. Infleqtion and Quantanium have gone public this year, PsiQuantum was valued at $7 billion in late 2025, and Rigetti and IonQ shares have surged. The U.S. Department of Energy's Quantum Genesis initiative, announced in June, aims to deliver a scientifically relevant fault-tolerant system by 2028, and public markets have priced in the possibility that at least one of these companies gets there. Oratomic's pitch is that it can do it with an order-of-magnitude smaller machine.
