Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) said on July 29, 2026 that it has completed its acquisition of Modular Inc., the AI-native software company behind the Mojo programming language and the MAX inference platform, in an all-stock deal reported at roughly $3.9 billion. Modular co-founder and CEO Chris Lattner has been appointed Executive Vice President of Advanced AI Software and Platforms at Qualcomm.
What Qualcomm is buying
Modular's stack was designed from scratch to abstract generative and agentic AI workloads across heterogeneous silicon — CPUs, GPUs, NPUs and custom accelerators — through a unified compiler, runtime and deployment surface. Mojo, MAX and Modular Cloud will continue as products and brands, Qualcomm said, with expanded investment and support. The pledge is meant to defuse concern that a strategic buyer would close off the open ecosystem that gave Modular its developer following.
An edge-to-cloud AI compute play
"With Modular's world-class engineering team, we're enabling a new and open approach to AI software development, enabling AI to run efficiently across any hardware while maximizing performance," said Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon. The company is positioning the combined stack as a leading AI compute platform for data center, edge infrastructure and personal and industrial AI — the same growth areas it pointed to during its participation in NVIDIA's Open Secure AI Alliance.
Filling the software gap around Dragonfly and Dragonwing
The Modular deal lands alongside Qualcomm's push into the data-center CPU market with the AI200/AI250 accelerator roadmap and the Dragonfly C1000 CPU unveiled in June. Buying Modular gives Qualcomm a first-party software layer capable of running the same workload on its NPUs, its incoming data-center silicon and the custom accelerators of hyperscaler customers — a direct answer to NVIDIA's CUDA moat and a lever that could reshape competition in enterprise AI compute.
