Qualcomm Technologies announced two new mobile platforms on May 7, 2026: the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. The chipsets are aimed squarely at the midrange and entry-tier smartphone markets and push features that were premium-only a generation ago — Wi-Fi 7, hardware ray tracing, and a more capable Hexagon NPU — deeper into the price points where most of the world buys phones.

Snapdragon 6 Gen 5: Closer to Premium

The 6 Gen 5 is built on a 4nm process and pairs a single prime core at up to 2.8 GHz with seven performance cores. Qualcomm claims it delivers 20% faster app launches and 18% less screen stutter compared to the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4, alongside a 21% bump in GPU performance and 90fps gaming. It also brings hardware-accelerated AI features such as on-device image segmentation and real-time translation, plus support for ultra-fast 5G and Wi-Fi 7.

Snapdragon 4 Gen 5: Entry Tier Catches Up

The 4 Gen 5 is the first chip in Qualcomm’s entry-level family to support 8K HDR video capture and on-device generative AI image effects. The platform integrates the X63 5G modem with global mmWave support and an upgraded ISP that handles up to four simultaneous concurrent cameras.

Qualcomm said commercial devices powered by the new chips are expected from Honor, OPPO, realme and REDMI in the second half of 2026. The launch follows a busy week of supply-chain news for advanced semiconductors, with Qualcomm continuing to lean on TSMC capacity to ramp the 4nm parts.

Midrange chips account for the largest share of global smartphone shipments, so the Snapdragon 6 / 4 Gen 5 launch is one of the most important moves of the year for on-device AI adoption. Pulling generative AI features down to phones in the $250–$400 range will dramatically expand the addressable surface for AI camera, voice and on-device assistant workloads in 2026.
