Quantinuum and Saudi Arabia's Aramco have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to explore how industrial quantum computing can tackle scientific and engineering challenges across the global energy sector, the companies said on September 3, 2026.
What the MoU covers
Under the framework, the two sides will run preliminary technical onboarding, exchange knowledge, and identify Aramco operational problems that are candidates for quantum research. Focus areas include complex problems in energy production, chemicals, and digital transformation, alongside benchmarking of different quantum computing modalities such as trapped-ion and superconducting hardware.
Why Aramco is looking at quantum
The world's largest oil company is preparing for a potential fault-tolerant quantum computing research collaboration and continues to position itself as a lead adopter of advanced quantum techniques in the energy industry. Aramco has been building an internal quantum roadmap through university partnerships and pilot projects with hardware vendors, and the MoU extends that push to Quantinuum's integrated hardware-software stack.
Quantinuum's play for enterprise workloads
Quantinuum CEO Rajeeb Hazra said organizations that expect to benefit from quantum need to start building expertise, algorithms, and workflows today. The deal follows a busy stretch for the company, which recently unveiled the Quanta Computer partnership for industrial quantum programs, launched Helios on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and reported its first quarter as a Nasdaq-listed company after its $1.68B June IPO.
