U.S. Special Operations Command has picked up a five-year IDIQ contract for Boston-based Sea Machines Robotics' SM300-SP autonomy kit, giving special operators a fast way to turn locally sourced boats into unmanned surveillance and logistics platforms without shipping dedicated USVs into theater.

SM300-SP: A Kit, Not A Boat

Announced September 8, 2026 and detailed in follow-up coverage this week, the deal covers the SM300-SP, a portable autonomy stack that fuses GNSS, IMU, radar, AIS, depth and weather feeds into a single perception picture, then drives the host vessel through Sea Machines' TALOS mission software. Vessels retrofitted with the kit can execute autonomous transits, remote pilot missions and customised behaviours — from station-keeping to formation runs — with collision-avoidance behaviours running under the hood.

Why SOCOM Cares

The command described the arrangement as a way to "generate unmanned surveillance, logistics, and security capacity without relying on dedicated USVs transported into theater." Translation: a small SOF element operating from a partner-nation port can source local boats, install SM300-SP kits and get an unmanned maritime capability in hours, not weeks — a lighter footprint than shipping and sustaining purpose-built USVs. The IDIQ vehicle also gives SOCOM the ability to order at pace without renegotiating each buy.

TRL 9, Off-The-Shelf

Sea Machines is positioning the SM300-SP as commercial, non-developmental TRL 9 — engineering vernacular for "in production, already deployed" — which fits SOCOM's preference for kit that skips prototype-to-production risk. The company has been building marine autonomy stacks since 2015, and the SP designation marks a hardened variant tuned for special-operations mission profiles.

A Wider MUSV Buildout

The award fits a wider Pentagon push to fold commercial marine autonomy into the fleet. The Navy has been running its MUSV marketplace demonstrations with Sea Machines, Saronic, Leidos and HII, and the U.S. Naval Academy has begun flying uncrewed systems from Yard Patrol craft. SOCOM's Sea Machines pick puts a proven autonomy stack in the hands of the customer that most values speed of fielding — and quietly sets up follow-on orders across other services.
