Japanese contractor Shimizu Corporation has kicked off full-scale development of Physical AI humanoid robots and painting robot arms for construction sites, with field trials at the Tokiwabashi Torch Tower and technical cooperation from Sony.

Shimizu Corporation, one of Japan's largest general contractors, has launched full-scale development of AI-powered humanoid robots and robot arms for construction sites, aiming for practical deployment by fiscal 2030. The July 2026 announcement follows demonstration trials at the Tokiwabashi Torch Tower project in Tokyo.

Physical AI on the job site

Under President Tatsuya Shimmura, Shimizu is grouping its new robots under the label "Physical AI" — AI that perceives the real world through cameras and sensors and adaptively controls mechanical systems. Unlike single-purpose construction robots limited to programmed motions, the new humanoid platforms are intended as versatile machines capable of taking on multiple tasks as conditions change from day to day on active sites.

In an early trial, a humanoid robot autonomously navigated the Torch Tower site at 1.0 m/s while carrying a camera along a pre-designated route, streaming footage to a multimodal large language model for automated inspection analysis. A second stream of work uses robot arms that learn painting tasks by imitating skilled human workers.

Ecosystem, not a single robot

Shimizu describes the effort as building a construction-specific AI ecosystem — continuous cycles of data collection, simulation, model training and field testing. Modelling and archiving the tacit techniques of veteran tradespeople is also expected to help transfer skills as Japan's construction workforce ages, a demographic squeeze the industry has struggled to solve with conventional automation.

Partners and comparisons

Technical cooperation comes from Sony Group Corporation, which is contributing sensor and AI systems. The programme lands in a busy month for humanoid deployments: Unitree launched its H1 Pro in Europe on 22 July, and Samsung Electronics stood up a dedicated humanoid robotics division. Shimizu's is one of the most concrete construction-industry commitments to date, complementing broader Physical AI investments such as Ropedia's $30 million round for Physical AI data infrastructure.
