The U.S. Space Force has handed SpaceX a $4.16 billion contract to build the first piece of an orbital sensor constellation that can track and target airborne threats anywhere on Earth, the largest space-based moving-target indicator deal ever disclosed.

SB-AMTI takes air-tracking sensors to orbit

The award sits under the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) program, an initiative that aims to push airborne-target tracking off vulnerable aircraft and into low-Earth orbit. SpaceX is the first of nine companies in the program's vendor pool to be publicly named, with awards to the other eight expected over the next year.

USSF officials say the satellites will close coverage gaps inside contested airspace where crewed reconnaissance jets cannot safely fly, especially around adversary anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) zones. Initial operational capability is targeted for 2028.

Why this matters for Golden Dome and Space Force budgets

Reuters has reported that the SB-AMTI sensors are expected to feed the Trump administration's Golden Dome missile-defence architecture, layered alongside the space-based interceptors the Space Force wants ready by 2028. Pentagon investment in space-based ISR has expanded fast in 2026, alongside $500 million for Perennial Autonomy's counter-drone fleet and $106 million for L3Harris VAMPIRE counter-UAS systems.

SpaceX cements role as Space Force's biggest contractor

SB-AMTI extends a remarkable run of national-security wins for SpaceX following recent GPS launches for the Space Force. Space Force Col. Ryan Frazier said integration work begins immediately to "meet the program's rapid deployment milestones and address emerging national security requirements."
