The largest commissioned battery energy storage system in the Nordic region entered commercial operation this month in Ånge, central Sweden. Developed by Swiss BESS developer Delta Capacity and built on Sungrow's PowerTitan 2.0 platform, the 70 MW / 160 MWh project moved from procurement start to grid connection in 15 months and is now offering both frequency regulation and arbitrage into one of Europe's most volatile power markets.
A PowerTitan 2.0 Fleet In Sub-Arctic Conditions
Sungrow's utility BESS is engineered to run through Nordic winters and the sharp temperature swings that come with them. The Ånge system uses Sungrow's containerised PowerTitan 2.0 architecture, which integrates batteries, inverters, cooling and controls into repeatable blocks so operators can add capacity without rewriting the electrical design. Rapid response and grid-forming capability let it react in milliseconds to frequency events on the Nordic synchronous grid.
Delta Capacity's First Big Nordic Anchor
The plant is owned by Ånge Storage Solutions AB, a joint venture between the WOOD & Company Renewables Sub-Fund and Delta Capacity. Founded in 2023 and headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, Delta Capacity has close to 800 MWh under construction and is targeting a 1 GWh European pipeline in 2026 and more than 6 GWh in operation by 2030. The Ånge asset was acquired ready-to-build from UK developer RES and financed with Wood & Company.
The Nordic Grid Is Suddenly A Battery Market
Sweden's TSO Svenska kraftnät has been paying premium prices for fast frequency response as more wind and less hydro reshape the grid's inertia mix. That has drawn a wave of battery developers into the region, from Sungrow's own 600 MWh Nova Zagora project in Bulgaria to new grid-scale storage capacity funded by Centrica and other optimisers. Delta Capacity has already signed a Centrica-optimised follow-on portfolio in Sweden and says a Latvia project is next.
Sungrow, meanwhile, remains the world's largest BESS integrator by volume; the Nordic win follows partnerships with Spearmint Energy in Texas and Sunotec in Bulgaria, and reinforces its role as the go-to hardware supplier for developers standing up new markets. It arrives days after Aecon's 1,200 MWh Simcoe BESS deal in Ontario and Nebraska utility LES energising a 3 MW/12 MWh Eos zinc battery for a community microgrid.
