Munich-based battery analytics specialist TWAICE has been chosen by BayWa r.e. to provide vendor-agnostic performance and predictive analytics for the 137.5 MW/282 MWh Alfeld battery energy storage system (BESS) in Lower Saxony, Germany — the largest standalone battery in the country when it comes online in the third quarter of this year.

Alfeld is owned by Danish investment vehicle Scale Fund, which bought the project from German developer Kyon Energy. BayWa r.e. recently won the third-party operations and maintenance (O&M) contract on the asset, and is now layering TWAICE's analytics platform on top to detect underperformance before it shows up as a service ticket. The platform delivers normalized, BESS-native predictive insights — including imbalance, recoverable energy and temperature trend analysis — so that engineers can move from reactive troubleshooting to proactive operations as fleets balloon in scale.
Bigger fleets, sharper margins, less tolerance for blind spots

Alfeld lands amid a wave of German BESS activity highlighted at the Energy Storage Summit at the Battery Show Europe in Stuttgart this week. Aquila Clean Energy EMEA closed Germany's first fully merchant BESS financing on Project Wetzen, while Chint Solar Europe sold a 56 MW/180 MWh portfolio to Second Foundation. As intraday and ancillary services revenues fragment, owners can no longer rely on dashboards from a single battery vendor; independent analytics layers like TWAICE are becoming as much a part of the BESS stack as the cells themselves. Founded in 2018, TWAICE now supports leading battery companies and grid-scale operators across Europe and North America.
