Uber and Israeli autonomous-driving software developer Autobrains will launch a Level 4 robotaxi service in Munich built on NVIDIA's DRIVE Hyperion platform, the three companies announced at COMPUTEX Taipei on June 1, 2026. The Munich rollout is Uber's first European autonomous deployment and the first commercial integration of Autobrains' self-learning, unsupervised driving stack with Hyperion at full Level 4.
An OEM-agnostic deployment model
The Munich service will use a Hyperion-certified vehicle reference design that pairs Autobrains' perception and planning AI with NVIDIA's compute, sensor and safety stack. Crucially, the architecture is OEM-agnostic: Uber and Autobrains can plug in any Hyperion-compliant electric vehicle, sidestepping the bespoke integration projects that have slowed earlier European robotaxi pilots. The first fleet will operate within a geofenced urban operating domain covering central Munich and key suburban corridors.
Why Munich
Bavarian regulators have moved further than most European authorities in approving Level 4 commercial operations under the country's 2021 Autonomous Driving Act, and Munich already hosts pilots from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and several German autonomy startups. The city offers Uber a dense, regulated environment to prove its supervised-fleet operations model before expanding to other German and EU markets.
A second-front strategy against Waymo
For Uber, the Munich deal is part of a deliberate global push to build a portfolio of branded robotaxi partnerships rather than ride on any single autonomy provider. The company already operates U.S. robotaxi services with Waymo and is preparing to launch a Lucid-Nuro fleet under the same umbrella. The new Autobrains agreement deepens Uber's relationship with NVIDIA after both companies joined the wider DRIVE Hyperion ecosystem expansion announced earlier today, alongside Foxconn, Stellantis, HUMAIN and Lucid.
Timing and next steps
Uber said riders in Munich will be able to hail Hyperion-equipped Autobrains vehicles through the standard Uber app starting in late 2027, with safety drivers initially and progressive driver-out conversion through 2028. Autobrains will scale a new European operations center in Munich to support sensor calibration, fleet learning and remote supervision. Pricing details have not been disclosed.
