Voyager Technologies has picked up a U.S. Space Force contract to develop a flight-ready satellite-to-satellite communications waveform, giving the Denver-based defense and space firm a foothold in one of the Pentagon's fastest-growing programs of record: the Space Data Network.
Optical Cross-Links For A More Resilient Constellation
The award, made by Space Systems Command on August 10 and confirmed by Voyager this week, funds development of a communications waveform that lets military spacecraft talk directly to one another across different orbits without routing every message through ground stations. It also includes an in-space demonstration requirement to prove the link on orbit rather than in the lab. Space Force officials frame the effort as the connective tissue for a Space Data Network that spans low, medium and geostationary orbits with multiple redundant data pathways.
Voyager Positions Between Silicon Valley And Legacy Primes
"Our ability to deliver commercially with manufacturing capacity, transparent pricing and cost predictability is critical as the Space Force scales their data network," said Matt Magaña, president of space, defense and national security at Voyager Technologies. The pitch positions Voyager between traditional primes such as Lockheed Martin and newer defense-tech entrants like Anduril and Palantir on Silicon Valley-flavoured DoD contracts.
Space Data Network Fills Out After Multi-Vendor Adds
Voyager's contract slots into a Space Data Network build-out where Space Force has already added multiple vendors in 2026, and follows the company's $300 million agreement to acquire lunar-lander maker Astrobotic in June. It also lands as the Pentagon's RRS-G ground moving target program and Space Development Agency Tracking Layer awards ramp - all of which will need resilient inter-satellite links to be operationally useful.
Voyager, which went public in 2025 and operates the commercial Bishop Airlock on the International Space Station, has been building a defense book of business alongside its civil-space work. The Space Data Network waveform contract deepens that pivot into national-security space communications.
