ACWA Power has signed three Storage Services Agreements with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) to develop grid-scale battery energy storage plants totaling 6,000 MWh in Saudi Arabia. The agreements, signed on August 20, 2026 at a ceremony in the Ministry of Energy in Riyadh attended by Minister of Energy HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, cover facilities at Haden, Muwayh and AlKahfah, each rated at 500 MW / 2,000 MWh under 15-year contracts and capable of delivering electricity for up to four hours at full output.
Three sites, one of the world’s largest BESS procurements
Haden and Muwayh sit in Saudi Arabia’s western region, while AlKahfah is in the north of the Kingdom. Together, the three projects add up to 1.5 GW / 6 GWh of dispatchable storage, which ACWA Power says is one of the largest battery energy storage procurements globally. Omar Al Hassan, CEO – Saudi Arabia at ACWA Power, said the plants will store energy produced during the day and supply it during periods of peak demand.
Anchoring Saudi Vision 2030 renewables
The tender was conducted by SPPC, which operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy as Saudi Arabia’s principal electricity buyer. Treating storage as a standalone service could set a template for future BESS procurements as the Kingdom pushes ahead with Vision 2030. ACWA Power has already been mandated by the Public Investment Fund to develop roughly 70% of Saudi Arabia’s renewable-energy pipeline, and has parallel storage experience at its international BESS peers like the 770 MWh Tashkent Riverside project in Uzbekistan and the 1,227 MWh Red Sea Project inside the Kingdom.
A wave of Middle East storage
The Saudi deal comes as global battery storage momentum accelerates. Recent grid-scale contracts include EDF’s 400 MW / 1,600 MWh Winston project in Nevada and Enel Green Power’s 100 MW grid-forming BESS in Chile. ACWA Power currently holds 41 assets across Saudi Arabia spanning solar, wind, gas, desalination and green hydrogen.
