EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA) and Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA) said on August 18, 2026 that they have commissioned Sandrini Energy Storage, a 92 megawatt / 368 megawatt-hour lithium-ion battery in Kern County, California, sized to shift enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of more than 22,000 homes.

Four-Hour Battery Bolted To A 300 MW Solar Site

Sandrini Energy Storage sits alongside the 300 MW Sandrini Solar array, and RCEA already offtakes 100 MW of that solar generation. Under a separate energy storage service agreement, RCEA has contracted for 100% of the battery's capacity, giving the Humboldt-based Community Choice Aggregator a dispatchable resource that can hold roughly four hours of discharge and firm evening ramps on California's grid.

"Sandrini Energy Storage represents an important investment in California's energy future," said EDPR NA Chief Executive Sandhya Ganapathy. "Energy storage transforms renewable power into reliable, around-the-clock electricity, ensuring clean energy is available when demand is highest." RCEA Executive Director Beth Burks said the project supports the agency's goal of building new clean capacity that matches customer demand while strengthening grid reliability.

Second BESS In EDPR NA's California Fleet

Sandrini adds to a growing California portfolio that now totals roughly 1,230 MW across wind, solar and storage assets, including Scarlet Solar & Energy Storage (400 MW + 190 MW) and Rising Tree Wind. EDPR NA said the Sandrini project will generate more than $5 million in local tax revenue for schools, roads, emergency services and parks, and supported around 50 construction jobs. The developer also pointed back to its 200 MW / 800 MWh Flatland Energy Storage project in Arizona, inaugurated in June, as the template for its scale-up in the Western Interconnection.

Storage Wave Keeps Building In California

Utility-scale batteries continue to dominate California interconnection queues as developers race to firm up midday solar. Sandrini follows a run of BESS commissions across the state, and mirrors global additions such as the Enel Finis Terrae grid-forming BESS in Chile and utility-scale gigawatt-hour projects tracked in EDF's 400 MW Winston solar-storage build in Nevada. Peers including LG Energy Solution's Lansing LFP line are ramping the cell supply that keeps such projects on schedule.
