Sembcorp-owned Australian retailer-generator Alinta Energy has taken delivery of the first battery containers for its 250MW / 1,000MWh Reeves Plains Battery project, marking the point where the four-hour BESS transitions from civil earthworks into electrical fit-out. Forty-eight of the 194 planned battery units, plus a first tranche of the 89 inverters, are on site at the greenfield location roughly 60 kilometres north of Adelaide, principal contractor GenusPlus Group said this week.
The Deal Sheet: CATL Cells, Power Electronics PCS
Reeves Plains is being built with battery units from China's CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology) and grid-forming power-conversion systems from Valencia-based Power Electronics. GenusPlus Group Ltd (ASX: GNP) is delivering EPC as principal contractor. The 250MW / 1,000MWh (four-hour) Stage 1 build is designed to be duplicated into a 500MW / 2,000MWh site with an already-planned Stage 2 addition. Main construction began in April 2026 and the plant is targeted for commercial operation by 2028.
Why South Australia Keeps Getting The Big BESS
South Australia already runs on more than 70% variable renewables in shoulder seasons, and Alinta is stacking Reeves Plains next to a state that has repeatedly turned to grid-scale batteries to firm wind and solar out-of-hours. GenusPlus's Kevin Arnold called seeing the first units land "an exciting moment for everyone," while Alinta's Ken Woolley pointed out the completed footprint will "span an area that's three times the size of the Adelaide Oval."
Where It Sits In The Global BESS Push
Reeves Plains lands as global BESS supply chains creak: Jupiter Power just closed $1.4 billion for 10 U.S. BESS projects, Fluence locked in a 206 GWh LFP framework with EVE Energy for 2027-2031, and Nova Scotia Power just fired up Atlantic Canada's largest BESS fleet. Australia's own NSW firming tender simultaneously wrapped up its Round 2 with 3 GWh of storage now operational. For CATL, Reeves Plains extends its dominance of Australian utility-scale battery pack deliveries; for Power Electronics, it is another anchor deployment for its grid-forming PCS platform.
