AMD and Anthropic on July 22 unveiled a strategic partnership under which Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs inside AMD Helios rack-scale systems, and AMD will make a strategic equity investment of up to $5 billion in the frontier AI lab. The first gigawatt of MI450 capacity begins deployment in the first half of 2027, with additional multi-year phases stretching well beyond.
Helios Racks Anchor The Buildout
The MI455X flagship of the MI450 Series will run inside AMD Helios rack-scale solutions paired with AMD EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando networking and ROCm software — the exact stack AMD debuted at Advancing AI 2026 in Anaheim. The deal extends Anthropic's existing use of AMD MI355X GPUs and locks in a second gigawatt-class supplier alongside NVIDIA and Google TPUs. AMD CEO Lisa Su called Helios "a major platform for the next generation of AI infrastructure."
Claude Meets ROCm In A Two-Way Trade
Beyond hardware, the two companies are launching a multi-year engineering collaboration to use Claude to optimize AMD Instinct workloads and accelerate ROCm software development. AMD will also broadly adopt Claude across its own engineering and product development teams — the largest publicly announced enterprise deployment of Claude inside a chipmaker to date. Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown said running Claude across diversified hardware lets the lab "map the right workloads to the right hardware."
A Wall Street Endorsement Of AMD's AI Roadmap
Coming just weeks after Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 launch and AMD's Advancing AI 2026 keynote, the deal validates AMD's multi-year rack-scale bet. It also mirrors the equity-plus-supply playbook seen in SK Group and NVIDIA's $500B+ pact — with hyperscalers and model labs increasingly co-underwriting compute buildouts. The $5B equity check will be milestone-contingent, keeping AMD aligned with Anthropic's revenue and deployment ramp.
