Aurora Innovation and Volvo Autonomous Solutions have launched a new 200-mile autonomous truck route between Dallas and Oklahoma City, expanding the joint freight network the two companies have been building toward fully driverless commercial service.
The lane, announced in early May 2026, runs five days a week under supervised autonomy and uses the Volvo VNL Autonomous Class 8 truck integrated with the Aurora Driver self-driving stack. Aurora says it mapped the interstate route and began autonomous hauls within weeks of committing to the corridor.
How the route works
Trucks haul freight directly to customer facilities at both ends of the route, an upgrade from prior pilots that terminated at staging yards. The Dallas–Oklahoma City lane connects to Aurora's existing Texas terminals and extends its commercial coverage outside the state for the first time.
Why now
The route opens just weeks after Aurora and McLane took a parallel Dallas–Houston lane fully driverless, and as Aurora enters the final validation phase for driverless operations on additional corridors. Together the moves give Aurora and Volvo more accumulated production miles than any other commercial autonomous trucking program in the United States.
Volvo's hardware bet
For Volvo, the Oklahoma City launch validates its decision to build a purpose-engineered autonomous Class 8 platform — the VNL Autonomous — rather than retrofit existing trucks. The Aurora-Volvo combination has emerged as the leading vertically integrated alternative to Kodiak AI in the U.S. long-haul market.
Outlook
With supervised hauls now logging hundreds of miles per trip across multiple routes, Aurora and Volvo are positioning to scale driverless operations through the back half of 2026. The next milestone investors will watch is the first commercial revenue-generating driverless run on the Oklahoma City lane.
