Boston Dynamics on September 22, 2026 opened the Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America outside Savannah, Georgia — a dedicated training ground for the all-electric Atlas humanoid inside a working automotive plant.
Parts logistics first, assembly by 2030
Atlas begins with parts logistics — preparing and sequencing components before assembly — before graduating to component assembly work by 2030 and, eventually, heavier repetitive tasks. The center will relocate in 2027 to a facility roughly 10 times larger as the program scales.
Boston Dynamics also plans to explore Atlas applications across aerospace, semiconductors, logistics, food and beverage and life sciences from 2027 onward, using RMAC as a template for enterprise deployments.
25,000 humanoids across Hyundai and Kia
Hyundai Motor Group has committed to 25,000 Atlas robots across its Hyundai and Kia plants globally, backed by a U.S. manufacturing footprint capable of producing 30,000 humanoids a year. "Together with Hyundai Motor Group, we are pioneering physical AI at enterprise scale," said Zack Jackowski, chief product and technology officer at Boston Dynamics.
A vertical humanoid stack
The tie-in stacks vertically with recent Hyundai-Boston Dynamics moves: a shared robotics AI institute in Boston, deep pockets from Hyundai's 2021 acquisition and the electric Atlas platform that Boston Dynamics now trades production commitments with rivals like 1X over. It also puts a marker down against Figure AI's Helix generalist deployments and China's fast-scaling humanoid programs.
