At CES 2026, Caterpillar unveiled a sweeping autonomous construction lineup — excavators, dozers, loaders, haul trucks, and compactors — built on three decades of automation R&D and pledged $25 million to workforce education.

Caterpillar used the CES 2026 stage to unveil a sweeping autonomous construction lineup that the company described as the "next era of autonomy" — autonomous excavators, haul trucks, dozers, loaders, and compactors, all developed on top of three decades of in-house automation R&D and real-world deployment in mining.

What's New

Caterpillar said the new excavators are designed for trenching, loading, and grading; the loaders for material handling and truck loading; and the dozers for precision grading and earthmoving. Each machine carries integrated LiDAR, radar, GPS, and high-resolution cameras that feed a 360-degree digital model of the jobsite.

The Software Stack

The new systems are built on a foundation of AI, machine learning, computer vision, and edge computing — processing sensor data in real time on the machine. Caterpillar is pulling in best-of-breed simulation tools and has previously announced collaborations with NVIDIA on physical AI training, an approach echoed in the Cadence-NVIDIA partnership for sim-to-real workflows.

Workforce Pledge

Alongside the hardware, Caterpillar committed $25 million over five years to a global workforce innovation prize aimed at retraining operators for digital and autonomous roles. The company has been explicit that autonomy will reshape — not eliminate — jobs across the jobsite.

Where It Fits

Caterpillar has been operating autonomous haul trucks in mining for decades; the new lineup pushes those lessons into the much messier world of construction, where job sites change daily and traffic mixes humans, machines, and materials. Competitors — Built Robotics, Doosan Bobcat, and Komatsu — have stitched together pieces of this stack; Caterpillar is offering it as a single integrated portfolio from one OEM.

Commercial Timing

Caterpillar did not commit to commercial availability dates. Field pilots with select contractors will run through 2026 and 2027 ahead of broader deployment. Industry analysts project the autonomous construction equipment market at over $18 billion by year-end 2026, with a 9%+ annual growth rate.
