Createc, a Cumbrian robotics and sensing specialist, has been named an authorised Boston Dynamics reseller and technology provider — with global authorisation to serve the nuclear sector — after more than six years working together on hazardous-environment deployments.
Global nuclear rights, UK & Ireland enterprise lead
Under the expanded agreement, Cockermouth-based Createc has been granted worldwide authorisation to support the nuclear industry, recognising expertise built on the deployment of Boston Dynamics' Spot mobile robot at sites like Sellafield Ltd. Createc will also represent Boston Dynamics across the UK industrial market and lead Enterprise Asset Management activities throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
Six years of Spot in the hot zones
Createc has customised Spot for radiation mapping, contamination surveys and remote inspection since 2020, adding its own sensing and integration layer for use at facilities including Sellafield, Network Rail, EDF and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Employing about 70 people across offices in Cumbria, Oxford, Tokyo and Oslo, the company was pivotal in taking Boston Dynamics' quadruped from research pilot to production tool in one of the world's most safety-critical industries.
What Boston Dynamics gets in return
"Createc has been a standout partner over the last six years, pushing the boundaries of what Spot can achieve in demanding and hazardous environments," said Marco da Silva, vice-president and general manager for Spot at Boston Dynamics, whose Waltham, Massachusetts headquarters is rolling out an expanded partner program around end-to-end autonomous inspection and asset management. Createc chief executive Will Newsom said the deal will "help us bring those benefits to more organisations around the world."
Nuclear robotics goes commercial
The agreement widens across defence and broader infrastructure sectors as well, and comes amid a rush of quadruped deployments in nuclear decommissioning and power generation. Boston Dynamics reports over 1,500 Spot units deployed across energy, mining, construction and manufacturing globally — and, as we reported earlier this year, Sellafield's "mechanical mutts" have now moved to full-time duty in the site's highest-radiation zones.
