The Defense Innovation Unit and its industry partner Honeywell Aerospace have flight-tested a quantum magnetic-navigation system on a commercial jet, one of the first operational validations of a GPS-free alternative navigation stack for U.S. military aircraft.

An 89% accuracy gain without GPS

According to a Defense Innovation Unit release dated 4 September, Honeywell Aerospace's MagNav system was installed on an Embraer 170 that flew a round-trip mission over the Pacific between Seattle's Puget Sound and southern Alaska. After four hours and 23 minutes of GPS-denied flight, the MagNav system improved position accuracy by 89% versus traditional backup navigation methods. Position data streamed to the pilots in real time via standard tablets, meaning the technology can be fielded without ripping out existing cockpit avionics. Honeywell told DefenseScoop the trials took place the week of 22 June.

How the quantum sensor works

MagNav uses quantum sensors to read the Earth's natural magnetic field, effectively turning the planet's crust into an unjammable map. The capability stems from a DIU program launched in 2024 called Transition of Quantum Sensing, for which Honeywell was tapped for prototype development. It is now a component of Honeywell's Alternative Navigation Architecture (HANA), a software-defined framework that fuses magnetic navigation, computer vision and low-Earth-orbit satellite signals for platforms operating in denied or degraded PNT environments.

Next stop: the C-17 Globemaster III

DIU and Honeywell plan to move the system onto a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III cargo aircraft later this year. The push comes as the Pentagon accelerates quantum partnerships and quantum supply-chain work, and follows a June executive order and a $200M Pentagon commitment to transition quantum sensing and timing technologies into intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
