Dongfeng Motor Corporation says it will begin small-batch trial production of its Xiaodong humanoid robot at the end of 2026, joining a growing list of Chinese automakers stitching embodied AI into their own factories before selling it to anyone else.
Xiaodong Heads To The Sorting Line, Yuanzai Goes To The Dealership
Zhang Zhenlin, chief engineer of intelligent technology at Dongfeng, told CnEVPost that the state-owned automaker will deploy Xiaodong into its plants in October 2026 for material sorting and quality inspection tasks. Trial production of the humanoid begins by year-end, and Dongfeng wants Xiaodong's working capability "on par with those of human workers by the end of next year." A separate quadruped robot called Yuanzai will reach commercial deployment first, showing up at Dongfeng dealerships as an autonomous customer guide.
The 15th Business Unit Playbook, Dongfeng Edition
The move follows a pattern set by BYD, Xpeng, Chery and SAIC, all of which have stood up in-house robotics groups that borrow the sensor stacks and AI perception software already running in the parent company's cars. Dongfeng is explicitly leaning on that overlap: its automotive AI capabilities port cleanly to humanoids, and the company's massive vehicle manufacturing footprint gives Xiaodong a captive customer for its first few years.
The Bigger Bet: 50 Billion Yuan Overseas Expansion
The humanoid push lands alongside Dongfeng's 50 billion yuan ($7.41 billion) global expansion plan, which targets 10 international production bases, 5 R&D centers and 1.5 million overseas vehicle sales by 2030. Embodied intelligence is being framed by Dongfeng leadership as a natural extension of that automotive capex — one that reuses the same batteries, motors and perception hardware Dongfeng already builds in volume.
Where This Fits In China's Humanoid Arms Race
Chinese carmakers are moving faster into humanoids than any other cohort in the industry. UBTECH's Liuzhou plant is now rolling out one humanoid every 10 minutes, and Chery's Aimoga is on sale to consumers. Dongfeng's timeline is conservative by that standard — trial batches this year, human-parity capability next year — but the Xiaodong-plus-Yuanzai one-two pattern (a humanoid for the plant, a quadruped for the showroom) is becoming the default template for automotive OEMs entering physical AI.
