Rome-based cybersecurity startup Exein has raised a $270 million Series C led by Headline at a $1.7 billion post-money valuation — a 30x jump from its Series B two years ago — becoming Italy's newest unicorn and, on the strength of the round, Europe's most valuable pure-play cybersecurity company.
Kernel-Level Runtime Security For Physical AI
"The concept of Exein is that every device should be able to defend itself, regardless if they are connected to a secure network or not," CEO Gianni Cuozzo told TechCrunch. The company's flagship Photon product runs inside device firmware at the kernel level to block attacks in real time, and Exein says it has already secured more than 2 billion connected devices across aerospace, industrial automation, automotive, energy, healthcare and semiconductors.
A Foundation Model For Machine-Speed Attacks
Cuozzo says open-source AI models running without guardrails have unleashed a wave of "machine-speed attacks" against physical devices. Exein plans to respond with a foundation model for physical AI security — trained on machine data and telemetrics and slated for Q1 2027 release — that will cover AI robots, drones, self-driving cars, sensors and other edge devices. Company revenue is growing 400% year-over-year, with half already coming from Asia Pacific.
Big-Name Syndicate And EU Regulatory Tailwind
Headline led the oversubscribed round with participation from Sofina, Goldman Sachs, the European Investment Bank Group via the European Tech Champions Initiative, KfW Capital's Wachstumsfonds Deutschland, and Deutsche Telekom's T.Capital. Existing backers Balderton, HV, Intrepid Growth Partners, 33N Ventures, Lakestar, Supernova Invest, Blue Cloud Ventures and Geodesic Capital followed on. Exein will use the capital for M&A and to accelerate expansion in the U.S. and APAC, with a tailwind from the EU's Cyber Resilience Act — reporting obligations kicked in last week and full force arrives December 2027.
The round joins a cybersecurity funding surge that this month also produced Fortaegis' $50M Series A, Cymphony's $30M and CrowdStrike's Falcon Guardian AIDR launch.
