Nasdaq-listed Factorial Energy announced its first commercial drone battery order on July 24, 2026, formally extending the solid-state battery maker's business from electric vehicles into aerospace. The Boston-based company will supply high energy-density lithium-metal cells to a US pack integrator for use in unmanned aerial vehicles, marking the first paying customer for its Solstice platform outside the automotive sector.
How Factorial's cells got there
The order follows a strategic partnership signed on July 13 with Tulip Tech Group, a Den Bosch-based UAV battery specialist that ships more than 100,000 packs a month to 250-plus defense, security and commercial customers, NASA among them. Initial customer flight testing of Factorial's cells inside Tulip packs delivered a more than 30% increase in flight range compared with the incumbent lithium-ion baseline, before any engineering optimization.
From 1,200 km on the road to 30% more in the sky
CEO Siyu Huang framed the aerospace push as a continuation of the same qualification playbook that produced last year's 1,200-plus kilometer Mercedes-Benz demonstrator drive and validated 77 Ah automotive cells in Stellantis lab testing. "Where lithium-ion runs out of road, lithium metal is just taking off," she said. The company designed a new drone-oriented cell, built integration partnerships across three continents, completed flight testing and secured a first purchase order in about six months.
Physical AI is redefining the drone-battery ceiling
Factorial is positioning solid-state and lithium-metal as the enabling energy layer for what it calls physical AI, the fast-growing category of autonomous drones, aircraft, spacecraft, robots and defense platforms that must carry both their intelligence and their power. PwC pegs the global physical-AI market at roughly EUR430 billion by 2030, and the UAV segment alone is projected to exceed USD 160 billion by 2034. The order lands alongside a wave of new energy-hardware partnerships reshaping how autonomous systems power missions.
