Plug Power has landed a 50-megawatt electrolyzer order for the Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub in Newcastle, New South Wales after project owner Australian industrial giant Orica cleared the final investment decision, making the site the largest renewable hydrogen project in the country to reach FID and the first Hydrogen Headstart recipient to enter execution.

What The Deal Covers

Plug's GenEco proton-exchange-membrane electrolyzers will sit adjacent to Orica's existing ammonia manufacturing plant on Kooragang Island, drawing renewable electricity from the New South Wales grid to produce approximately 4,700 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year at full capacity. The hydrogen will progressively displace natural gas in Orica's production of low-carbon ammonia and ammonium nitrate, cutting roughly 7.5% of the Kooragang site's natural gas consumption - the equivalent of removing about 26,500 cars from Australian roads annually.

Public Funding And Australian Position

The Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub received AU$432 million in production credits from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency's Hydrogen Headstart program, providing revenue certainty for the offtake of the hub's low-carbon ammonia products. Orica group president for AusPac and sustainability German Morales called the FID a significant milestone, adding that the company picked Plug because of its proven track record in delivering large-scale PEM systems.

The Hunter Valley award adds to a global pipeline that now includes the 100 MW Galp project in Portugal - one of Europe's largest electrolyzer installations - and pushes Plug's installed base beyond 320 MW across six continents. Plug CEO Jose Luis Crespo said the selection reflects the confidence customers place in Plug's technology and framed Australia as a key part of Plug's global growth story.
