George Mason University and Oxford-based quantum systems integrator TreQ announced on 3 September 2026 that they will install Virginia's first open-architecture quantum computing system on GMU's Northern Virginia campus. The $7.7 million QPU is scheduled for delivery and installation in early 2027, with commissioning targeted for late summer 2027.
An open stack instead of a single vendor
The machine will be the first US deployment of TreQ's proprietary Open Architecture Quantum (OAQ) framework, which lets operators mix qubit modalities, cryogenic infrastructure and control-stack software from multiple vendors. TreQ, founded by former US Air Force reserve brigadier general Mandy Birch, has previously integrated systems built at Rigetti, NASA, Apple and Cisco, and led delivery of the UK's first commercial quantum computer.

Backed by a $2.4M GMU catalyst investment
George Mason is pairing the TreQ install with a $2.4 million catalyst investment, six new postdoctoral positions and three new faculty positions across its College of Engineering and Computing. TreQ will design and operate the system while collaborating with GMU on research, curriculum and industry connections across Virginia's quantum ecosystem.
Virginia joins the quantum arms race
The deal expands US public-university quantum access beyond established sites at Chicago, Maryland and Colorado. It follows a string of quantum partnerships this quarter, including SEEQC and Taiwan's QITPO on cryo-chip supply, Quantinuum and Aramco and Jülich and eleQtron's JION trapped-ion machine in Germany.
