Google's Gemini app has crossed one billion monthly active users, CEO Sundar Pichai announced on X, marking the fastest-growing product in the company's 28-year history and its 14th to hit the billion-user mark alongside Search, Gmail, Android and YouTube.
Racing ChatGPT On Voice And iOS
The milestone puts Gemini in the same league as OpenAI's ChatGPT, which crossed one billion monthly users in June. Google grew Gemini from around 400 million in May 2025 to 950 million in July, and blew through the billion threshold in August. Notably, more than 100 million of those users are on iOS, showing the app's pull outside Google's own ecosystem. Search's AI Mode has separately reached over one billion monthly users, though today's number is specific to the standalone Gemini app.
Voice And Image Generation Drive Usage
Google shared behavioural stats alongside the announcement: 63% of Gemini users interact via voice, and the app now generates more than 150 million images per day. Daily active users tripled year-over-year, according to Q2 2026 earnings commentary. The milestone lands just before Google's Made by Google event, where the company is expected to roll out more Gemini-powered features across Pixel devices, and follows the launch of Gemini 3.7 Flash at half price, aimed squarely at the AI agent market.
The Distribution Advantage
Google's core distribution — pre-installed on billions of Android devices, wired into Search and Workspace — remains the swing factor in the consumer AI race. Rivals like xAI's Grok and Apple's on-device AI push are chasing at a fraction of the scale. With daily user growth accelerating and iOS penetration climbing, Google now has a genuine mass-market chatbot channel to complement its ad business.
