IBM on August 26, 2026 announced it had completed the acquisition of HRL Laboratories, the storied Malibu research institute jointly owned for decades by Boeing and General Motors. The deal, whose financial terms were not disclosed, hands IBM a decades-deep bench in silicon-spin qubits, quantum sensing, quantum materials, cryogenics, control electronics, packaging and interconnect technologies — all pieces IBM says will strengthen its quantum hardware roadmap toward a fault-tolerant machine by 2029.
Silicon spin joins superconducting
HRL's silicon-spin capabilities complement IBM's superconducting quantum architecture, giving the company a second modality to bet on as physicists race to scale error-corrected systems. IBM plans to keep pushing its superconducting-qubit line — anchored by IBM Nighthawk and the modular IBM Quantum Starling program targeted for 2029 — while using HRL's silicon expertise to inform Blue Jay, IBM's next-generation fault-tolerant successor targeted for the mid-2030s.
A boost for Anderon foundry ambitions
The acquisition also complements IBM's push into quantum manufacturing infrastructure. HRL's silicon-based quantum expertise creates natural opportunities for future collaboration with Anderon, IBM's pure-play quantum wafer foundry announced earlier this year, supporting scalable manufacturing approaches across multiple qubit modalities. Boeing and General Motors, HRL's former owners, will continue partnering with IBM and HRL on quantum applications and advanced technology development, preserving the aerospace and automotive research pipelines that made HRL an industry secret weapon for more than sixty years.
Quantum M&A heats up
The IBM-HRL close punctuates a blockbuster stretch of quantum deal-making. On the same day the deal cleared, Pasqal nearly doubled in its Nasdaq debut after closing a $360 million SPAC, while Xanadu locked in CAD $195 million from Ottawa for photonic quantum manufacturing and Japan switched on Shunkai, its first neutral-atom quantum computer. Analysts say the wave of consolidation reflects a maturing industry in which pure-play labs need hyperscale patrons — or hyperscale capital — to survive the multi-year road to error-corrected machines.
What HRL brings that IBM did not have
Founded in 1948 as Hughes Research Laboratories, HRL pioneered the laser, liquid-crystal displays and heteroepitaxial silicon-on-sapphire electronics. In quantum, it is one of a handful of teams anywhere in the world with a working silicon-spin qubit fabrication line, and it holds patents on cryogenic control electronics and quantum-sensing packaging that IBM had previously licensed piecemeal. Adding HRL's roughly 500-person workforce brings that stack in-house alongside IBM's Yorktown Heights and Poughkeepsie quantum sites, and gives Big Blue a West Coast R&D anchor for the next decade of quantum work.
