IonQ to Install Superion 256 Quantum Computer at NVIDIA NVAQC

IonQ's 256-qubit Superion system will become the first QPU inside NVIDIA's Accelerated Quantum Research Center, linked to a GB200 NVL72 supercomputer via NVQLink.

IonQ to Install Superion 256 Quantum Computer at NVIDIA NVAQC

IonQ said on September 23, 2026 that it will install its Superion 256 trapped-ion quantum computer as the first QPU inside NVIDIA's Accelerated Quantum Research Center in Boston, giving quantum-classical researchers a fault-tolerant-scale device coupled directly to an NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 supercomputer.

A first for the NVAQC

The Superion 256 is IonQ's sixth-generation trapped-ion architecture and its first commercial system designed for scalable, fault-tolerant quantum supercomputing. Inside the NVAQC it will connect to a GB200 NVL72 via NVIDIA NVQLink, with hybrid workloads orchestrated in NVIDIA CUDA-Q. Installation is targeted for 2027, matching IonQ's first customer deliveries of the platform.

Bridging quantum and AI supercomputing

NVIDIA vice president of quantum and CUDA-X libraries Timothy Costa said the pairing supports the company's view that every future supercomputer will also be a quantum supercomputer. IonQ chief executive Niccolo de Masi said access to the NVAQC's tightly coupled classical stack will accelerate the co-design work needed to scale trapped-ion systems from lab experiments into production supercomputing infrastructure.

A quantum tape-out for the market

IonQ shares jumped roughly 11% on the news, which came the same week the company detailed a new error-decoder breakthrough. The NVAQC deal follows other recent NVIDIA quantum tie-ups and continues a run of infrastructure pacts including Akamai's $11.6B Anthropic cloud deal and Cornelis Networks' $205M active-fabric round.
