Lucid Motors is closing in on the next milestone in its autonomous ride-hailing partnership with Nuro and Uber, with the completion of 35 product-validation prototype vehicles scheduled for August 2026. It is the sixth of eight development gates that stretch from the July 2025 partnership signing to a commercial rollout in the San Francisco Bay Area later this year.
Five Milestones Done, Three To Go
According to the timeline in Lucid's first-quarter shareholder presentation, five of the eight milestones have already been ticked off, the most recent in April. After the August prototype gate, only production of the commercial fleet and final safety-and-validation testing stand between the program and its late-2026 launch. Production of the launch-fleet vehicles is scheduled for early Q4 at Lucid's Arizona factory.
A Lucid Gravity Body, A Nuro Driver, An Uber Front End
The robotaxi is built on the Lucid Gravity SUV with a sensor stack that fuses cameras, solid-state lidar and radar into a 360-degree perception module tucked into a roof-mounted halo. High-performance compute runs on NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor within the DRIVE Hyperion platform, driving Nuro's end-to-end AI foundation model. The Uber-designed in-cabin experience uses interactive screens for climate, music, support and pull-over requests, and can seat up to six passengers.
The Signal Investors Will Read On August 4
Lucid will report its Q2 2026 results on August 4, giving investors their first chance to hear whether the August milestone is holding. The stakes are high: Lucid is trying to convert a partnership stack of automotive hardware, autonomy software and ride-hailing demand into revenue, while Waymo has just relaunched freeway trips in Phoenix and Zoox has secured the first-ever NHTSA exemption for a purpose-built robotaxi.
A Multi-City Expansion Already Signed
The Bay Area launch is meant to be the beachhead. Uber, Nuro and Lucid have already committed to bring the same robotaxi service to Houston in 2027 and are running joint deployments with several ride-hailing platforms. For Nuro, which pivoted from grocery delivery to a general-purpose autonomy platform, the Lucid partnership is the clearest proof yet that its stack can move people, not just goods.
