Meta Platforms is in early talks to lease as much as $10 billion of AI compute to Anthropic over a two-year period, according to a New York Times report on 17 July 2026 that both Meta and Anthropic have declined to comment on. The talks are preliminary and either side can exit, but the framing lays bare how quickly excess Nvidia GPU capacity has become a sellable product for the largest AI operators.
Meta Compute Enters The Ring
Under the proposed structure, Anthropic would pay Meta in monthly increments over two years. The internal name for the effort is "Meta Compute", the same programme Meta bolstered with the hire of former AWS compute leader Dave Brown only days earlier and that Bloomberg reported was being spun into a formal cloud business to sell excess GPU capacity.
The deal would help Meta diversify beyond advertising by generating revenue from its infrastructure, positioning it against so-called neocloud providers such as CoreWeave and Nebius. For Anthropic, which has been publicly rationing capacity across Claude and its enterprise products, the deal would top up the compute it already secured from AWS and from its $35 billion Blackstone/Broadcom XPU partnership.
Smaller Than SpaceX, Still Historic
Even at $10 billion the arrangement would be smaller than Anthropic's existing three-year, $45 billion compute deal with SpaceX, but it would still rank among the largest infrastructure agreements ever struck between two AI-native companies. It also underscores that even the largest labs are relying on multi-supplier compute sourcing to guarantee training runs and inference capacity.
What It Means For The AI Stack
If the deal closes, Meta will effectively become a wholesale supplier to a competitor whose Claude family targets many of the same enterprise workloads Meta is pursuing with its own Llama and MetaAI products. That has parallels with the enterprise-cloud playbook of the prior generation, when Amazon Web Services began serving direct retail competitors.
