IonQ announced on September 24, 2026 that Florida International University will host its Superion 256 trapped-ion quantum computer in Miami by late 2027, marking the first Superion 256 deployment in Florida and IonQ's flagship academic partnership in the state.
A 256-qubit trapped-ion system heads to Miami
The Superion 256 is IonQ's sixth-generation trapped-ion system, the first the company has said it can ship by the hundred, and the model NVIDIA also chose earlier this week for its NVAQC accelerated quantum computing center. At FIU, the machine will live inside a dedicated secure facility on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus in west Miami, once the university's new on-campus data center is finished.
Materials, AI, cybersecurity and grid research
FIU President Jeanette M. Nuñez said the system will be open to students, faculty and external researchers working on materials science, artificial intelligence, logistics, cybersecurity, health and power-grid management.
