Lidar developer MicroVision (Nasdaq: MVIS) on June 10 disclosed a Master Development Agreement with what it called the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, locking the Redmond, Washington company into multi-year work on perception for autonomous haul trucks. The initial Program Description, dated June 1, puts two of MicroVision's Iris lidar sensors on each off-highway truck and explicitly opens the door to upgrading to its next-generation Halo sensor.
What The MDA Actually Covers
The framework agreement covers joint development, validation and commercialisation of perception capabilities for the OEM's autonomous platforms, with a focus on quarry and aggregate hauling. The integrated stack pairs Iris's long-range lidar with MicroVision's perception software to deliver high-resolution environmental awareness, obstacle detection and situational intelligence in dust, vibration and low-light conditions typical of mining sites. Development is already under way, with testing and validation aligned to the customer's autonomous product roadmap.
Validating The Q1 Acquisition
CEO Glen DeVos framed the deal as confirmation of the asset acquisition MicroVision closed in the first quarter of 2026, which brought additional perception software and sensor inventory in-house. By offering Halo as a backward-compatible upgrade to existing Iris customers, MicroVision is trying to extend lifetime revenue per truck while limiting integration risk for the OEM — an approach increasingly common in industrial autonomy programmes where multi-year fleet retrofits dominate.
Why Off-Highway Matters
Mining and quarry operators have moved faster than highway logistics on autonomous hauling because fenced sites simplify regulatory paths and labour shortages bite hardest in remote regions. Demand for solid-state, long-range lidar that survives the harshest industrial environments has lifted MicroVision and rivals such as Ouster, Innoviz and Hesai into multi-year OEM partnerships rather than pure spot sales. Engineering centres in the U.S. and Germany underpin MicroVision's industrial portfolio alongside its automotive and security and defense lines.
